In today’s post we’re going to talk about the generations of the Subaru Impreza WRX STI, the high-performance version of the Impreza line, developed by Subaru’s motorsport division, Subaru Tecnica International (STI). Known for its rally heritage, the STI is distinguished from the standard WRX by more powerful engines, sophisticated all-wheel-drive systems, and heavy-duty mechanical components.

Generations
- GC Series (1994–2000): The original generation. It began as hand-modified versions of the WRX. Notable models include the widebody 22B STI, built to celebrate Subaru’s 40th anniversary and WRC success.

- GD Series (2000–2007): Famous for its distinct headlight facelifts, often nicknamed by fans:
- Bugeye (2000–2002): Round headlights.

- Blobeye (2003–2005): More angular, swept-back design.

- Hawkeye (2006–2007): A three-piece grille and pointier headlights.

- GR/GV Series (2008–2014): Introduced a 5-door hatchback body style alongside the traditional sedan.

- VA Series (2015–2021): Subaru officially dropped the “Impreza” name for this generation, marketing it simply as the WRX STI.

The STI is engineered for raw performance and durability under racing conditions:
- Engine: Historically used the EJ-series 2.0L or 2.5L turbocharged “Boxer” engines, producing roughly 300–310 hp in later years.
- Transmission: Equipped with a heavy-duty 6-speed manual transmission, whereas the WRX often used a 5-speed manual or CVT.
- Drivetrain: Features a Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD), allowing drivers to adjust the torque split between front and rear wheels.
- Hardware: Includes larger Brembo brakes, stiffer rally-tuned suspension, and stronger axles/differentials.
Current Status
Subaru concluded production of the gas-powered WRX STI in 2021. While there are no immediate plans for a new internal combustion STI, recent concepts like the Subaru Performance B STI hint at a potential high-performance return, possibly incorporating electrification.
