How to Change Your Car’s Oil Like a Pro

Changing your car’s oil is a fundamental DIY maintenance task that can save you money and extend the life of your vehicle. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you perform an oil change like a professional.

What You’ll Need:

  • New oil (check your car’s manual for type and quantity)
  • New oil filter
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Socket wrench and appropriate socket
  • Oil drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Jack and jack stands or ramps
  • Gloves and safety goggles
  • Rag or paper towels

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare Your Vehicle

  • Park on a Level Surface: Ensure the car is on a flat surface and the engine is cool.
  • Lift the Car: Use a jack and secure the vehicle with jack stands or use ramps. Always follow safety procedures.

Step 2: Drain the Old Oil

  1. Locate the Oil Drain Plug: It’s typically under the engine on the oil pan.
  2. Position the Oil Drain Pan: Place it under the plug to catch the old oil.
  3. Remove the Drain Plug: Use a socket wrench to loosen and remove the plug. Allow the oil to drain completely (this may take a few minutes).

Step 3: Remove and Replace the Oil Filter

  1. Locate the Oil Filter: Refer to your owner’s manual if needed.
  2. Remove the Old Filter: Use an oil filter wrench to unscrew it. Be prepared for some oil to spill out.
  3. Install the New Filter: Before installing, apply a small amount of new oil to the rubber gasket of the new filter. Screw it in by hand until it’s snug, then tighten an additional ¾ turn.

Step 4: Add New Oil

  1. Reinstall the Drain Plug: Ensure it is tight but not over-tightened.
  2. Add New Oil: Use a funnel to pour in the new oil slowly. Refer to the manual for the correct amount.
  3. Check Oil Level: Use the dipstick to ensure the oil level is within the recommended range.

Step 5: Check for Leaks

  • Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
  • Check under the car for any leaks around the drain plug or oil filter.
  • Turn off the engine and recheck the oil level, adding more if necessary.

Step 6: Dispose of the Old Oil

  • Collect the old oil and filter and take them to a recycling center or auto parts store that accepts used oil for proper disposal.

Tips for a Pro-Level Oil Change

  • Use Quality Tools: A good oil filter wrench and socket set make the job easier.
  • Stay Clean: Wear gloves and have plenty of rags on hand.
  • Keep Records: Log the date and mileage of each oil change to maintain your vehicle’s service history.

The pictures are helpful, but the writting could be better. Some of the steps are a litle confusing. Needs more detail about disposal of the old oil filter.

Seriously? This article is to basic. I’ve been changing oil for years, and this didn’t teach me anything new. Waste of time.

Don’t forget to recycle your used oil! Many auto parts stores will take it back for free. It’s important for the environment.

I disagree with the section about tightening the drain plug. Your method is risky! Using a torque wrench is far safer and prevents over-tightening. You shoud mention it.

Oh, I’m sooo impressed. Changing oil? Groundbreaking stuff. 🙄 Next time, teach me how to use a spork.

This is hilarious! I picture someone reading this article, wearing a monocle and tiny gloves while changing their oil! 😂

You forgot to mention using a torque wrench for the drain plug! That’s crucial to avoid stripping the threads. Your instructions are incomplete and potentially damaging!
