On October 26, 2025, two U.S. Navy aircraft assigned to the USS Nimitz (CVN-68) crashed into the South China Sea within 30 minutes of each other.
Incident Details
MH-60R Sea Hawk: The helicopter went down at approximately 2:45 p.m. local time while conducting routine operations.

F/A-18F Super Hornet: Roughly 30 minutes later (around 3:15 p.m.), the fighter jet also crashed into the sea.

Outcome & Recovery
Personnel: All five service members involved—three from the helicopter and two from the jet—were safely rescued and reported in stable condition.
Wreckage: By December 2025, the U.S. Navy successfully recovered both aircraft from a depth of approximately 400 feet for analysis.
Investigation: While the causes are still under official investigation, early speculation by officials included the possibility of “bad fuel”. China’s military explicitly denied that electronic jamming was involved.
The incidents occurred as the USS Nimitz was transiting the region during its final deployment before decommissioning.
