The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang is an American long-range, single-seat fighter and fighter-bomber used during World War II and the Korean War, among other conflicts.

These were the greatest fighters of World War II, according to Capt. Eric “Winkle” Brown, who flew all of these aircraft and is arguably one of the greatest pilots in history.
1. Supermarine Spitfire
The Supermarine Spitfire is a British single-seat fighter aircraft that was used by the Royal Air Force and other Allied countries before, during, and after World War II. It was the only British fighter produced continuously throughout the war.

2. Grumman Hellcat.
The Grumman F6F Hellcat is an American carrier-based fighter aircraft of World War II. Designed to replace the earlier F4F Wildcat and to counter the Japanese Mitsubishi A6M Zero, it was the United States Navy’s dominant fighter in the second half of the Pacific War.

3. North American Mustang IV.
The North American Mustang IV (RAF designation for the P-51D and P-51K) was a premier long-range, high-altitude escort fighter used by the RAF and RCAF during WWII, featuring a bubble-top canopy and a 1,490 hp Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. Operating in 1945, these aircraft specialized in escorting bombers over Europe and reconnaissance, with top speeds exceeding 400 mph.

4. Mitsubishi Zeke.
The Mitsubishi A6M “Zero” is a long-range carrier-capable fighter aircraft that was manufactured by Mitsubishi Aircraft Company, which was part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. It was operated by the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) from 1940 to 1945.

5. Hawker Tempest V.
The Hawker Tempest is a British fighter aircraft that was primarily used in its Mk.V form by the Royal Air Force in the later stages of the Second World War.

6. Kawanishi George 21.
The Kawanishi N1K was an Imperial Japanese Navy fighter aircraft which was developed in two variants.
